3. Assess and Review the Exposure

Plants should follow one corporate process for selecting the assessment method, recording required data, and escalating uncertain results.

Calibration asks several assessors to evaluate the same work and resolve meaningful differences in how they applied the method. Highly variable tasks, uncertain force levels, conflicting results, or major capital decisions may still require an ergonomist or another qualified professional.

4. Verify the Change

Closing an action item does not prove that the exposure improved.

Suppose a plant installs an adjustable lift table. The baseline shows a shorter worker handling heavy material at normal speed. The follow-up captures a taller worker, a lighter product, and a slower line.

The score may fall, but the plant cannot confidently credit the lift table.

NIOSH recommends following up on ergonomic interventions to confirm that controls reduced the original risk factors and did not introduce new ones. A meaningful reassessment should reproduce the relevant baseline conditions as closely as practical.

Standardization Does Not Mean Using One Method Everywhere


Repetitive electronics assembly, warehouse case lifting, and whole-body material handling do not present the same physical question.
